The Great Fashion Stitch Up

Bellingen NSW, August 2024

The inaugural Great Fashion Stitch Up took place in Bellingen NSW, in 2024.

The community gathered to discuss issues including the mental health strain of living in a world of fast fashion.

Two large piles of textile waste represented a single week of unsellable items left at Vinnies and clothes discarded at the council tip.

Community members got creative with these textile mountains, lining up at the Sewing Station to repurpose unwanted garments into stylish, fun and imaginative pieces of clothing.

Creative thinkers are dreaming up new ways with fashion that don’t wreck the planet. We need to redesign fashion from the ground up and change it.

At the Wear It Workshops and in the Yarn Yurt, we heard about innovative approaches to tackling the issue of textile waste from Purplecard Project, Abbey Mitchell Wearable Art, Mary Walker Textiles, Bowerbird Tipshop, Lemu Reeves and Zenzi Grace.

When you create a garment out of trash, your sense of value for the fabric changes. You can feel proud of what you wear, not only because it’s stylish, it’s also helping reduce textile waste to landfill.

Saving the planet has never been so fun or stylish!
